What is CCSS?
CCSS stands for Common Core State Standards , which set teaching and learning goals for math for our nation's children. CCSS has been adopted by 46 states.
This chart shows how the main math skills progress from grade to grade.
A central focus of the CCSS is to develop in all children habits of mind that make for thoughtful, civic-minded citizens.
These habits of mind include:- perseverance in problem solving
- reasoning abstractly and quantitatively
- construct ing viable arguments and an ability to listen and consider the reasoning of others
- using models, tools, precision, structures, and patterns in reasoning about mathematics
These habits of mind begin in the very youngest grades, as children are invited to explain their thinking and work through toward reasonable conclusions.
Simple questions like "How do you know?" "Is there another way to tackle this problem?" "How are your ideas alike and different?" inspire children to think deeply about every learning opportunity and help them to become thoughtful citizens of the world.
